About Paul Cotugno

A little about Paul Cotugno

Teacher, Performer & Accompanist

Pianist

Paul Cotugno

Lifelong musician.  Twenty-five years teaching piano.

Formal Education

I started piano lessons at age 9, and continued until I graduated high school. I then attended Berklee College of Music in Boston (my home town) for 5 semesters, where I studied many aspects of jazz (theory, song writing, improvisation, arranging), as well as courses in classical theory and counterpoint. Next it was off to the University of Massachusetts Lowell for a degree in Music Education.

A few months later, I was accepted into the Jazz Studies program at Indiana University, and after my first semester I was awarded an Associate Instructor position… I taught courses in the jazz department while working towards my Masters degree, which ended up being in Jazz Studies with a minor in classical piano.

Wild Youth

Three days after my last final exam, I was playing piano on a cruise ship out of Miami. I remained on various cruise ships for over 2 years, traveling all over the world…and getting paid for it!

I rejoined the real world in 1992, when I moved to Colorado, and have been here ever since.

And now . . .

I have been giving piano lessons out of my home studio for 21 years. I also play for weddings, funerals, and private events and I accompany singers working on jazz, rock, and pop songs in a weekly vocal master class. I served as chairman for the Broomfield Piano Festival for 6 years.  For the past 15 years I have been playing at several churches in the area…give a listen to my “Hymnprovisations” ongoing musical blog.

When I am not at the piano, I spend time with Laura, my wife, a professional seamstress.  We often visit our 3 adult children. I love the mountains and lakes (that’s the main reason I moved here), so Laura and I spend as much time as we can “camping” in our travel trailer, with our 2 dogs. We love to hike, kayak, and bike ride. I also love to bake cakes and pies, but my favorite cooking endeavor is making pizza…in my opinion, the world’s greatest food!
